San Francisco with Kids: A Family Guide

The best of family San Francisco — the cable cars, the sea lions, the science museums, the bay, Golden Gate Park, and how to plan a trip that works for all ages.

San Francisco is a genuinely fun city for kids — cable cars to ride, sea lions to watch, hands-on science museums, a giant park, and boats on the bay. The compact size helps, though the hills and the cool weather call for a little planning. Here's how to build a family trip.

The big hits. Riding a cable car is pure delight for kids — the clanging bell, the open-air ride, the steep hills. The Pier 39 sea lions at Fisherman's Wharf are a free, guaranteed crowd-pleaser, with the carousel, arcade (the free Musée Mécanique), and Aquarium of the Bay right there. And getting out on the water with a bay cruise — sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge — is an easy, exciting outing.

Science and animals. Two museums are family gold. The California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park combines an aquarium, a planetarium, a four-story rainforest, and a natural history museum under one roof — easily a half-day. The Exploratorium on the Embarcadero is the original hands-on science museum, where almost everything can be touched and played with. Either could anchor a day.

The outdoors. Golden Gate Park is a kid's paradise — Stow Lake boats, a carousel, the bison paddock, and open meadows, much of it free. Crissy Field and the Presidio near the bridge offer beaches and open space with bridge views. And walking (a stretch of) the Golden Gate Bridge is free and memorable, weather permitting.

Alcatraz, for the right age. Older kids fascinated by the prison story love Alcatraz — the ferry, the island, the cellhouse audio tour. It's heavy subject matter and a fair amount of walking, so gauge your child's age and stamina. Book well ahead either way.

Pacing and logistics. Stay central so you can return to the hotel for downtime — the hills are tiring for little legs. Hotel Zephyr at Fisherman's Wharf is squarely family-friendly and right by the waterfront attractions; the Four Seasons-tier downtown hotels are polished but pricier. Dress everyone in layers (the fog and wind are real), build in outdoor breaks, and don't over-schedule — two anchor activities a day works best.

Food with kids. Easy wins abound: clam chowder in a sourdough bowl, Mission burritos and tacos, Chinatown dim sum (fun and shareable), and the city's casual, diverse spots. Save the ambitious tasting menus for a night the kids stay in.
